Presbyopia is a visual impairment affecting people over 40; they progressively have more and more difficulty reading up close.
To correct this defect, several solutions are available to us: magnifying reading glasses, degressive glasses, progressive glasses, bifocal glasses, contact lenses, implant.
We will focus more specifically on reading glasses and degressive glasses.
In optics, near vision is located 40 cm from the eye; it is called Harmon's distance and is equivalent to the length from the elbow to the bent fist. This is what we use to perform an eye exam. Reading glasses, near vision glasses, or magnifiers are lenses used since the Middle Ages.
There are 2 types of reading glasses:
- Custom-made glasses: these are glasses for which we adapt the lenses prescribed by the ophthalmologist or optometrist after an eye exam. They take into account all the personal parameters of each individual: distant vision defect (myopia, astigmatism, etc.), pupillary distance, etc.
- Pre-assembled glasses: these glasses only correct presbyopia with convex lenses from +1.00 to +3.50. The pupillary distance used is the standard pupillary distance, i.e., 62 mm for men and 59 mm for women. These glasses are suitable for emmetropic people (without visual defect) or for people who have become emmetropic through wearing contact lenses or after an operation. With this type of equipment, near vision is only possible at 40 cm; beyond that, everything is blurry. It is therefore impossible to move around, watch television, or work on a screen with them.
With the use of computers, new visual needs have emerged, and researchers have developed a lens that corrects different zones of proximity vision: clear near vision at 40 cm as well as vision of our immediate environment. This mid-distance lens uses the progressive lens design. At the top of the lens is the intermediate vision correction, and at the bottom, a stronger correction for near vision.
There are also 2 types of degressive glasses:
- Proximity glasses: made according to your prescription or eye exam. They take into account your personal parameters and are equipped with office lenses such as Interview, Access, etc.
- Pre-assembled glasses: they correct presbyopia from +1.00 to +3.50 and are mounted according to standard pupillary distances.
